GVRC has remained compassionate to the plight of children survivors in the country, with interventions often not limited by geographical scope. In 2012, the centre engaged with students of Nkama Primary School, Loitoktok- Kajiado County on a child protection awareness programme, championing for the rights of children to study in a safe environment. Out of this programme, GVRC was able to capture the plight of one young girl who had been sexually abused on her way to fetch water to wash the classroom, as it was the practice.
The school’s water tank had long broken down and the only source of water was a distant river miles away. A partner and friend of GVRC came to know about the heartfelt story and for the longest time couldn’t fathom that children can be at risk of violence due to lack of such basic but all too vital amenities as a water storage tank.
In October 2015, the school benefitted from two newly installed water tanks which have proven to be very instrumental in ensuring the safety of the children in the school. Proximity to clean water for the students significantly minimized the amount of time the students spent away from the classroom fetching water and simultaneously increased the school’s mean score during the term exams. The school management was very appreciative of GVRC’s efforts in making education safe for them that they invited the team to officiate the school’s prize giving day as Guest of Honours.
